It’s raining cats and dogs! Well, not exactly...but it is literally raining animals. For thousands of years, weird and unusual rain has been reported around the world. Believe it or not, there have been accounts of frogs, fish, cows, and various other bizarre items falling from the sky!
Exactly where some of this “rain” comes from may ultimately remain a mystery. One example of weird rain documented in Colorado from 1982 to 1986 reports that tons of kernels of corn rained down on several homes in Evans. Oddly enough, there were no cornfields in the area that could have accounted for the phenomenon.
It has also rained frogs! Not just one time either. One account of frog rain occurred in Southern Greece in 1981 when citizens awoke to small green frogs falling from the sky. Meteorologists predicted they had been picked up by a strong wind and carried over to Greece…from North Africa!
There is even a story from 1877 that reports several, one-foot-long alligators falling on J. L. Smith's farm in South Carolina. They landed, unharmed, and started crawling around, reported The New York Times. Fact or urban legend? You'll need to be the judge on that one!
