Your Dog Really Does Care
Most dog owners feel an undeniable emotional connection with their pets, convinced that their pooches reach out to provide comfort when they’re upset. According to studies, this is not just wishful thinking—dogs really do care. A recent study done by London-based psychologists looked into the emotional connection dogs have with their owners. Eighteen dogs were studied in their owners’ homes, where a stranger would move through a variety of activities, including speaking, humming and pretending to cry.
The key condition—crying. The conclusion showed that the dogs not only approached their crying owners, but also approached the crying stranger in order to comfort both. The study also concluded that we appear to have bred our dogs to show not only empathy, but sympathy, which is a desire to comfort others who might be in emotional distress.
